G Adventures’ Planeterra is looking to combat a rise in ‘community-washing’ by creating a Community Positive Framework to define the principles and practices of genuinely positive community tourism.
Planeterra is also looking to create an Impact Measurement Toolkit, offering tourism businesses the chance to accurately measure progress and improve their impact. Speaking on the new initiative, Planeterra president Jamie Sweeting says that there is currently no agreed global standard for defining or verifying what positive community impact from tourism actually means. “If we want tourism to genuinely benefit communities, we need to understand what communities themselves define as positive and have practical ways to measure whether we are delivering it.” Work is underway on the framework in collaboration with industry partners. The Community Positive Framework and Impact Measurement Toolkit is scheduled to launch in Sep 2027.
