Football fever may be taking over, but it’s far from the only sport worth travelling for, says Intrepid Travel which is highlighting some of the more unusual options for sports-mad clients ready to experience something new.

The list comes as the operator highlights recent Wakefield Research, that found 57% of travellers want to go off the beaten path, and 43% are looking for local festivals and events.

Mongolia’s Naadam Festival involves wrestling, archery and horse racing. These are three disciplines once considered essential for Mongol warriors. Clients can experience this on Intrepid’s 15-day Naadam Festival trip, departing in Jul.

Somewhat less physical is Finland’s Tree Hugging World Championships (pictured) held in the Finnish Arctic every Aug, aiming to raise awareness about forest conservation.

The competition involves literally hugging trees. Kiwis are able to meet the family behind this competition on Intrepid’s five-day Finnish Lapland Winter Family Holiday.

Celebrating strength is Scotland’s Highland Games, held May to Sep, with Intrepid adding that this summer competition is also a celebration of Scottish culture.

Some departures of Intrepid’s Premium Scotland and Essential Scotland trips coincide with selected games.

Rounding out the list is India’s kabaddi, a fast-paced full-contact game combining elements of tag, wrestling and rugby.

Clients can attend a local kabaddi match as an optional activity in the cooler season from Oct-Mar in Jaipur on Intrepid’s North India Highlights trip. See more on the trips HERE.
