Is AI A New Threat For Airports?

Artificial Intelligence has been praised by many for the opportunities it offers in regards to efficiency, but this technology also comes with its downsides, and for the aviation sector it is cyberattacks.

ACI Europe Director General Olivier Jankovec recently warned that AI-enabled cyberattacks are a growing threat, and closer to home OneReg echoes this sentiment, saying the issue must be addressed through collaboration.

The aviation compliance and safety software platform’s co-founder and chief operating officer Carly Waddleton (pictured) says the threats facing airports today are rarely unique to a single organisation, adding that the attack patterns observed at one airport are often highly relevant to many others.

“Instead of hundreds of airports independently responding to the same threats, the industry could collectively learn and adapt faster than attackers can evolve,” she says. “The airports that succeed will be those participating in ecosystems that combine modern, resilient platforms with shared intelligence and collaborative learning.”

. . . Team Work Key

This is echoed by Jankovec, who says the emergence of Mythos-class threats, which are AI systems that are able to autonomously identify, chain and exploit vulnerabilities at unprecedented speed and scale, makes clear that cybersecurity resilience must now be collective across the entire aviation ecosystem.

Waddleton also highlighted the need for airports to address their complex technology environments, which see legacy systems, standalone solutions and bespoke integrations layered on top of one another, each addressing a specific operational need.

This, she says, results in a fragmented landscape with a larger attack surface. “As AI-enabled threats become capable of identifying and exploiting those weaknesses at unprecedented speed, reducing that complexity is a cybersecurity strategy in its own right.”

Jankovec says a weakness introduced anywhere in this supply chain can have operational consequences far beyond a single organisation. See more on OneReg HERE.
