Visitors to Anchorage quickly discover that there is more to explore in Alaska’s largest city than they expected, says Visit Anchorage Alaska, which has four reasons why travellers should stay longer.
Culture from Alaskan native dance, storytelling and art at the Alaska Native Heritage Center is on show in Anchorage, while agents should urge clients to keep an eye out for local festivals and community events.
Discovering local artists and craftspeople, a visit to the Anchorage Museum and discovering the local place names and stories of the Dena’ina, the native Athabaskan people, are also suggested.

Nature experiences on offer in the area include spotting moose and beluga whales, Northern Lights viewing and exploring Portage Glacier. Kayaking and paddleboarding on glacier-fed waters as well as hiking and biking, are also among the many reasons to stay a little longer says the tourism board. Then there’s the fresh Alaskan seafood, reindeer sausage, local breweries and distilleries and guided food tours. Fine dining begins at ORSO noted as ‘the place to be,’ to the more casual South Restaurant & Coffee House with its spacious patio with a ‘uniquely’ Alaskan view.
Anchorage, it says, is also great for a chance to relax at Alyeska Nordic Spa, Alaska’s first Nordic spa experience, in outdoor hot pools and saunas. These include The Nordic Spa at The Alaska Club and Alyeska Nordic Spa.
