Kiwis have proved to be creatures of habit, especially when it comes to travel, as new research reveals 89% of us have a ‘settling in’ ritual when arriving at a hotel room.

Between Check-In and Lights Out, a report commissioned for Holiday Inn Express by IHG found that 39% of Kiwis admit they unpack immediately, while 34% adjust the room temperature, and 34% search for charging points. A little less popular is bed jumping, though 31% of Gen Z and Millennials do admit to this.
. . . Sleep Too
These rituals re-appear when it’s time to turn in, with 21% of Kiwis polled having a wind-down routine before bed, consisting of deep breathing or meditation for 23%, and snuggling up to an item from home for 12%.
Quirkier behaviours come from Gen Z, with 21% admitting they must check behind curtains, under beds or ensure wardrobe doors are closed before switching off.
Positive psychology expert Dr Tim Sharp says these quirks are a natural response to being away from home, and in an unfamiliar environment.
“These small rituals, whether it’s unpacking immediately, adjusting the room temperature or following a familiar bedtime routine – help recreate a sense of familiarity and control,” he says. “And that’s what allows us to properly switch off, relax and ultimately feel happier.”
Dean Jones, vp commercial for East Asia & Pacific at IHG Hotels & Resorts, says the research keeps the brand in tune with what modern travellers want. See more HERE.
