Air New Zealand has leapt up the global ranking for punctuality in new monthly figures from OAG.
The national carrier has moved from 56th spot for on time performance for all airlines in Apr up to 24th place for May.
In the large airline category (airlines operating 10,000-20,000 flights) NZ jumped from 14th to fifth, says global air travel data provider OAG.
Notably, Qantas retained its top three position among major carriers (more than 20,000 flights a month) coming in third behind Avianca and SAS for flights arriving within 15 minutes of schedule. QF was 32nd overall.
. . . GA Tops List
With an ‘exceptional’ 97.77% of flights operating on time, Garuda Indonesia was the most punctual airline overall in May.
Asian-based carriers dominated the top 10, with half being northeast Asian. Jeju Airlines, the South Korean LCC, finished sixth with a 92.18% OTP rate but reported no cancellations across the 6682 flights tracked.
The data also captures the closure of US-based Spirit Airlines, last in 140th place, behind India’s SpiceJet which had only 35% of planes arriving on time.
. . . Cancellation Rates
Sixteen airlines achieved a 100% operational record in May with Jet2, the UK-based airline operating the most flights (14,298) without a single cancellation, closely followed by CEBU Pacific which operated all 12,412 scheduled flights and achieved 81.84% OTP.
Low-cost carrier OTP in May shows that Norwegian Air Shuttle was the most punctual European-based airline taking second spot behind Jeju Airlines globally.
