Costa Rica is rapidly rising in popularity with Intrepid Travel saying Kiwi demand for the destination is up 300% year-on—year and Kiwi travel agents have recently been there to see what all the fuss is about.
Lesley McLeod from Envoyage was among those in Costa Rica, courtesy of Intrepid Travel, and she says the destination has a relaxed and outdoorsy nature-focused feel about it that resonates with Kiwi travellers.
“There is such an incredible mix of adventure, nature and wildlife, from brilliant nature hikes, volcanoes, stunning landscapes, to tubing down rivers and constant wildlife spotting,” she says. “Seeing sloths, the crazy monkeys and the colourful tropical birds in their natural environment was such a special experience, and the biodiversity throughout the country is truly incredible.” Chris Daw from Flight Centre Eastridge echoes this, saying Costa Rica’s strong emphasis on eco-tourism and ‘Pura Vida’ lifestyle provides a unique opportunity to explore a fascinating destination. “The cuisine scene is also exceptional.”
Highlights from the famil included tubing on the Rio Celeste, a lunch stop with the women of Santa Rosa de Pocosol, and numerous ‘magnificent’ wildlife encounters. Daw says they saw a two-toed sloth foraging for food by the side of the road only two hours after landing into San Jose.
The pair praised a visit to the Children’s Eternal Rain Forest Reserve, an Intrepid Foundation partner that ensures the long-term survival of the forests by purchasing land to protect and restore.
Daw says the authentic experience created a meaningful connection with the forest and people of Costa Rica. For the wildlife lovers, McLeod says the night walks are a great opportunity to see creatures that you cannot spot during the day, including tarantulas, frogs and glowing beetles.
Intrepid offers eight trips within Costa Rica, and more than 20 itineraries that include Costa Rica as part of a multi-country journey, with these trips spanning themes including wildlife, family, multi-active adventure and premium travel.
