The inaugural direct flight between Christchurch and Port Vila by Solomon Airlines launched yesterday, and the twice weekly flight is part of a broader push by the Vanuatu Tourism Office to deepen its presence in the Kiwi market.

Vanuatu Tourism Office ceo Adela Issachar Aru says the South Island has long been a market the office has wanted to serve more directly.

The new Christchurch service means Vanuatu can now welcome travellers ‘who have dreamed of visiting Vanuatu but found the journey a step too far’, she says “We warmly invite South Islanders to come and discover everything our islands have to offer, the warmth of our people, the richness of our culture, and the extraordinary natural beauty of our home.”

The new route is ideal for travellers seeking sunshine, culture and adventure during the colder months, says CHC ceo Justin Watson. “At a time when many Cantabrians are dreaming of winter sunshine, this new direct service makes that escape easier than ever.”

IE ceo Matthew Findlay adds that, as the airline’s partnership with Air Vanuatu grows, it is also looking to increase interconnectivity across the nations of Melanesia, linking to New Zealand.

Trade members were among those on yesterday’s inaugural flight. See upcoming issues for more on the famil.
