It’s been 10 years since the launch of the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), IATA is marking the anniversary with a call for the European Union Emissions Trading System (ETS) review to support broader implementation of CORSIA.
More than 130 countries currently participate in CORSIA, and by the end of this year the scheme is expected to have mitigated approximately 200 million tonnes of CO2.
IATA senior vp sustainability and chief economist Marie Owens Thomsen says in a world increasingly characterised by fragmentation, CORSIA is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when states work together.
. . . CORSIA Standard
As such, IATA states that the review of the EU Emissions Trading System should reinforce CORSIA as the global framework for international aviation. The airline body is calling for the removal of the proposed ‘EU ETS as a Service’ mechanism, which would encourage parallel regional or bilateral carbon-pricing systems alongside CORSIA.
It also wants the EU to strengthen the SAF allowances mechanism by eliminating geographic production restrictions and additional conditions that limit support for sustainability-compliant SAF pathways.
It also urging the EU to ring-fence aviation-generated ETS revenues for SAF production, as well as for infrastructure and emerging aviation technologies. See more on the emissions issue HERE.
