The importance of travel when it comes to Kiwis’ happiness has been revealed—with new research showing travel as playing an important role in both our mental and emotional wellbeing.
Booking.com’s inaugural Travel Happiness Index found that 98% of Kiwi travellers associate travel with positive emotions, 82% add that having a trip to look forward to lifts their mood, and 62% say that anticipation helps them cope with the demands of daily life. And this is all before the plane even takes off. Once on the trip, happiness can be found in myriad ways for Kiwis. Some 32% finding joy in natural scenery, 22% in spending quality time with travel companions, and 19% in enjoying good food or drinks.
. . . Impact
It then comes as no surprise that Kiwis are basing travel around these things that bring joy, with 69% saying they are prioritising trying local food and incorporating meaningful experiences into their trips. However money continues to have an impact, as 65% admit they will choose dates or destinations based on travel deals. A focus on finances is also seeing holiday homes, apartments, and other unique stays resonate with 34% saying these offer better value for money.
. . . Certainty
With travel playing such a big role in Kiwis happiness, it continues to be prioritised even amidst global uncertainty, and 90% of those polled are willing to adapt rather than abandon their plans when faced with disruption.
This adaption for 23% means seeking alternative destinations that offer a similar vibe, while 17% are adjusting the time of their trip, and another 17% postponing.
The current environment has also seen Kiwis place a greater focus on technology and trust, with 84% saying they feel more at ease when booking through a trusted platform.
Booking.com regional manager Oceania and Korea Todd Lacey says the findings show that safety, clear pricing, relaxation, quality time with loved ones, and advance booking confirmation are the key ingredients of a great trip. “For many New Zealanders, travel is more than just about getting away, it is about feeling better, having something to look forward to, reconnecting, and having the confidence to keep exploring even when the world feels uncertain.” See the full index HERE.
