A new AI-powered feature in the American Airlines app lets its eligible frequent flyers select the seat characteristics they want as they complete their booking.

The feature then automatically moves them when a matching seat becomes available.
The airline says that it won’t move customers into a higher-priced seat, even if one becomes available within their criteria, to avoid additional charges.
Instead of checking the seat map many times before a trip, members can choose preferences such as a window, aisle or middle seat and let the app do the work.
The new seat-monitoring feature is available up to 24 hours before departure for AAdvantage members travelling on single-passenger reservations with an assigned seat.
Then if an eligible seat matching those preferences becomes available, the AA app automatically updates the reservation and notifies the customer.
. . . Tech Program
The new feature grew from AA’s ADEPT program, designed to recruit and develop early-career technology talent. By reducing routine monitoring and simplifying a common travel decision, the airline’s newest feature helps customers spend less time managing trip details and more time focused on the journey, says the carrier.
