When it comes to picking locations for a multi-generational getaway, Kiwi families continue to favour the Hawaiian islands thanks to their accessibility, soft adventure offerings and cultural experiences.

The Survey of International Air Travellers estimates that 40,000 Kiwis visited Hawai‘i in 2025, with around 34% of these Oceania visitors travelling with family/relatives.
Hawai‘i Tourism Oceania’s Darragh Walshe says recent research highlighted that four of the five key visitor segments for Hawai‘i were family/multi-generational. “Hawai‘i is particularly well-placed to meet the needs of these travellers, offering a diverse mix of cultural experiences, nature, soft adventure and family-friendly activities that appeal across generations,” says Walshe.
Hawai‘i’s appeal also lies in its direct flight options from New Zealand, adds Walshe, and a wide range of accommodation options. Aqua Aston Hospitality is also seeing multi-gen demand, and the group offers apartment-style accommodation across four Hawaiian islands, which its vp commercial strategy and marketing Theresa van Greunen says are a big drawcard for multi-gen groups, who often stay longer. “This accommodation type provides better value for money and convenience for group stays, which includes the cost savings of cooking meals instead of eating out, for many of our accommodation types include a kitchen, on-site or in-room washing machines.”
In addition, Virtuoso’s Jul survey showed that multi-generational and family travel led the types of trips that clients are asking agents for the most, at 69%. See more on Hawai‘i, multi-gen options, HERE.
