The perception Kiwis may have of Kansas and its reality are very different, says Kansas Tourism, which is highlighting the state as a diverse destination that’s well worth a road trip. 
Kansas Tourism’s Colby Sharples-Terry says many international visitors arrive with expectations of Kansas as a flat, rural state, but quickly discover a destination filled with diverse landscapes, world-class attractions and unexpected stories.
Kiwis often appreciate destinations that offer open spaces, outdoor experiences, unique landscapes, and authentic connections with local communities, all of which are central to the Kansas experience, adds Sharples-Terry.
“The state’s wide-open landscapes, dark skies, wildlife experiences and outdoor adventures provide a different perspective of America that many international travellers ne ver exp erience,” says Sharples-Terry. For this market, she highlights a road trip through the state, exploring places like Abilene, Lindsborg, Dodge City and Humboldt.
“Kansas offers a true road trip destination where visitors can slow down, explore small towns, experience local food and culture, and connect with the people who call the state home,” says Sharples-Terry.
“Visitors from New Zealand often find Kansas’ landscapes and hospitality familiar in spirit, while still discovering distinctly American stories and traditions.”
Building more on American stories, she highlights the Wild West history of Dodge City and the Oregon Trail, as well as Kansas’ indigenous cultures.
