The beaches and offshore islands of the Philippines are a major drawcard for visitors but there is another aspect to the republic that agents should encourage clients to visit—the highlands.
The Hiyop Highlands in Pandan, with views over the ocean, are good for camping, trekking and mountain biking, as well as stargazing, recommends the Philippine Department of Tourism (PDOT).
Part of the adventure are the rural villages and picturesque landscapes traversed to get there, it adds.
Closer to Manila, the Antipolo Highlands are easily accessed and offer resorts, private villas and nature parks.
It is also home to the Antipolo Cathedral which the NTO recommends visiting due to its fascinating history and venerated Black Madonna, who has played a big part in the region’s legends.
Overlooking Sarangani Bay and General Santos City is the Sarangani Highlands Garden and Restaurant Gensan with flowers, greenery and koi ponds.
The restaurant is renowned for its Philippine delicacies including seafood. Meanwhile, the Tagaytay Highlands (pictured) in Tagaytay City, gives visitors the chance to take in a mix of outdoor adventure in a resort-style stay in a villa, log cabin, or apartment.
The Taal Volcano is nearby as well as two golf courses. Other pastimes include horseback riding on scenic trails, ATV rides, fishing and boating on the lagoons and a range of spa treatments.
