Auckland Airport is introducing a new system where international travellers will move through security screening before passport control as it prepares for its new integrated domestic and international terminal.
Nicknamed ‘the Flip’ the project will result in a reverse of what happens now and will create a clearer separation between security screening and border control functions.
The new system will be in place by the end of next year as the integrated terminal is built.
AKL’s chief operations officer Chloe Surridge says the project is a major step in bringing domestic travel and international travel under one roof.
“This change in sequencing will pave the way for how travellers are processed through the new terminal, within one building.”
The project is being worked on with NZ Customs and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) —which provides the Aviation Security Service (AvSec)—and will align AKL’s departure process with many airports globally where security screening takes place before border control, she says.

Customs says the change to security screening first will create a safer environment for both travellers and staff. Customs is about to replace eGates at AKL, and aligning the upgrades of the gates with ‘the Flip’ project will help minimise disruption throughout the transition.
CAA deputy chief executive, aviation security, Fred Stein says putting security screening before passport control strengthens aviation security by identifying prohibited items and potential threats earlier. “It reduces the risk of unscreened passengers reaching secure areas and strengthens the layers of security.”
