Expedia has revealed the close-to-home island destinations in demand from New Zealand, with the New Caledonia capital claiming the crown, ranking first in the 2026 Island Hot List.
The list was created using Expedia’s search data of islands that are within easy reach of New Zealand, with New Caledonia topping the list thanks to a 225% increase in searches year-on-year. Expedia attributes the nation’s rise to its affordable luxury resorts and French touch, as well as the return of direct Auckland flights.
Vanuatu was in second, with searches up 90% year-on-year, cited for its authentic cultural experiences, volcanic landscapes and laid-back island lifestyle. Penang was
third, with the Malaysian island up 75% year-on-year.
The Whitsundays are in fourth place with interest up 70% year-on-year, bolstered by famed beaches and direct access to the Great Barrier Reef. In fifth was Bora Bora (pictured) which has a 65% search spike for its ‘once-in-a-lifetime appeal’.
South Korea’s Jeju Island in sixth (up 55%), and Okinawa, Japan in seventh (up 50%).
Fiji was eighth, with 15% growth, its enduring popularity attributed to its hospitality, luxury resorts and easy accessibility. Thailand’s Koh Samui is ninth (up 10%). Expedia travel expert Haley Purdon says Kiwi travellers are showing strong interest in island holidays that feel both accessible and rewarding. “For value-seeking travellers looking at ways to stretch their holiday budget further, Penang, Okinawa and Jeju Island stand out as affordable island destinations with average accommodation rates under $250 per night,” she adds. The Cook Islands rounded out the top 10 (up 5%), improved air access from Christchurch helping to increase Kiwi demand.
