CHC Airport Marks Int’l Milestone

It was on this day, 29 Jun, back in 1951 that Tasman Empire Airways Limited (TEAL) operated Christchurch Airport’s first commercial international service.

Fast forward to 75 years later, and the South Island hub’s connectivity has expanded significantly, rising from the once-a-week flight to Melbourne operated by a DC-4 Skymaster to offering direct links across Australia, Asia, the Pacific and North America.

Christchurch Airport ceo Justin Watson says the contrast between1951 and 2026 is striking. “In 1951, one weekly international flight was a major milestone,” he says. “Today, Christchurch is a thriving international gateway.”

And the airport’s network continues to grow, with upcoming new connections including Air New Zealand’s international services from Christchurch to Perth, Singapore and Tokyo. That first flight, says Watson, helped open the door to the world.

. . . NZ Flight

CHC marked 75 years of scheduled international flights with an Air New Zealand services NZ213 to Melbourne which took off at 0610 this morning. And unlike its predecessor the Skymaster, which took six and a half hours to make the journey, the A320neo will make the trip in just three hours and fifty minutes and use 25% less fuel per passenger. NZ gm domestic and short-haul, Lucy Hall, says that the milestone reflects both aviation’s evolution and the enduring partnership between the airline and Christchurch Airport. “From the early days of TEAL to today’s modern NZ network, Christchurch has been a critical part of New Zealand’s international aviation story,” she says.
