Visit California ceo Caroline Beteta encourages New Zealand travellers to take advantage of direct air ser vices into California. And for the self-drive clients she reminds agents that the iconic Highway One has reopened, making the renowned coastal journey between Los Angeles and San Francisco again fully accessible to visitors. Her tip is to encourage clients to plan ahead and check current route information HERE.

. . . The Facts

Speaking at IPW Beteta says she was aware that there ‘are many inconsistencies and misleading information out there’ so she says the message in 2026 is keep to the facts.

“We are leading with optimism, we are resilient; when faced with difficulties whether it be global or more local we push forward,” says Beteta. “We are the number one travel destination in the US and we have exciting new projects for the global stage with USD30 billion invested in improvements.”

These include a new LAX metro line into downtown LA which takes 35 minutes making travel and entry easier, and other infrastructure improvements ready for Super Bowl 61 next year and the 2028 Olympic Games. Route 66 is also celebrating 100 years in 2026 with centennial events including vintage car shows. See more HERE.

. . . Top Cali Spots

The trio offered their favourite tips for the Golden State.

Beteta recommends the Post Ranch Inn which she says offers wonderful tree accommodation. See HERE.

Brand USA boss Fred Dixon suggests some land-based whale watching along the Cali coastline, which he says is on his mother’s bucket list. USTA ceo Geoff Freeman highlights the hiking trails south of Carmel, which he adds is near Post Ranch Inn.

. . . Food Tips

When asked about Cali food tips, all three answered together. They highlighted the artichoke capital of the world in Castroville, the olallieberry (a cross between a loganberry and a youngberry) pie at Duarte’s tavern in Pescadero and the state’s fresh seafood—all washed down with Californian wine.
